Mercedes holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in accounting. She began her career as an accountant in Los Angeles before immigrating to Canada in 1977. In the 1980s, she obtained her real estate license through the UBC Sauder School of Business Real Estate Division.

Her commitment to professional development is evident through her participation in various programs, including the Rotary Club Graduate Leadership Training Program (2016), and coursework at institutions such as the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and Simon Fraser University. Additionally, she has completed the Certified General Accountant Program, Level 5, and the Credit Union Director Achievement Program offered by Credit Union Central, demonstrating her comprehensive skill set and readiness to excel in her field.
